Catahoula Leopard Dog / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed : : Female : : Adult : : Medium
PLEASE NOTE! Unless stated otherwise, our dogs and puppies are located in Arkansas, and transported to the north/northeast once adopted. We do occasionally have dogs/puppies placed in foster homes in the north/northeast. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet.
4/12/13 Libby is beautiful girl who was taken in as a neglect case. Her owners allowed her to live outside with no fence, and they provided her with no vet care or adequate food/water. They would throw out scraps if they had leftovers from their own meals, but otherwise she did not get fed. She had puppies about every 6 months, and they would also run loose until they would get hit by cars or killed in other ways, or would just "disappear". Finally the owner's neighbor contacted me in December and asked for help. Libby had a litter of puppies and in an effort to keep them safe, she had moved them under the neighbor's shed. The neighbor was upset about this because her own dog was tearing up her fence trying to get to Libby and the puppies, because she viewed them as a threat. Libby was only trying to keep her babies safe. We had an ice storm here in Arkansas on Christmas Day, and 2 days later, I went out there and crawled under the storage building to get the puppies. At first I didn't see Libby. Then here she came, from the property that she knew as home, and she approached me very slowly, nervously wagging her tail. I could see right away that she was scared to death, but even in her fear, she had to come and check on her babies, make sure I wasnt hurting them. She was so skinny and poor looking. She had been trying desperately to take care of her babies, feeding them even when she herself was starving. It was heartbreaking. The neighbor informed me that I couldn't take Libby because she was afraid if I took her, the owner would find out that she had called me, and would retaliate. Not that they cared about LIbby - they just viewed her as a piece of property. I told her if they asked, she could give them my phone number and I would gladly speak w/ them, but I wasn't taking the babies and leaving Libby there to die. So, I loaded them all up in my car that night and brought them home with me. I never heard from Libby's owners. Libby has turned out to be such a wonderful girl. Now that she has put on some weight, she is just beautiful and she is the most loving, affectionate, eager to please dog I've ever known. She gets along great with the other dogs here, although I would caution that she should not be in a home with a very dominant dog, as she won't be bullied. She also is not a bully herself. She is a peaceful soul and wants to stay that way. Libby is totally crate trained. She never has accidents and does not bark or whine while crated. She is very smart and would probably housetrain in no time. While here, she is not allowed in the house, except when she is in her crate, because I have a very grumpy, old Great Dane who is a total bully and hates other dogs coming into his house. Libby tested positive for heartworms and will undergo treatment within a couple of weeks. Once she completes her treatment, she will be available for adoption. As you may have sensed from this write up, I have grown very attached to her, and only want the best for her. I love her very much and would love to keep her myself, but I would rather see her go to a home where she can live indoors, as part of a family, because that is what she really longs for. She is great with kids - very gentle. She only wants one thing in life, and that is to be really loved by someone. She has so much love to give. We think Libby is about 2-3 years old, approx. 35-40lbs, and I have had her spayed and brought up to date on routine vaccinations. Libby will be transported to the northeast once she has been adopted, but for now she is located in Arkansas.
